Defining Success - My Thirtieth Entry

The need to feel like we can succeed is a part of human nature. Accomplishment is at the core of this process. It doesn’t have to be about becoming a star, or winning the Nobel Prize, but it does consist of feeling positive about ourselves because we did something. Achievement is tied to words like reaching, accomplishment, and attainment. These are all positive action words.

Conrad Hilton (a smart Hilton) was quoted as saying, “Achievement seems to be connected with action. Successful men and women keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don't quit.”
So we know that action and perseverance is related to success. What happens in when you hear phrases like?
· Your goal should be to overachieve
· Be the best you can be
· Give 110%
· Reach your full potential
· Exceed expectations

Some of us would live in fear of becoming overwhelmed by the pressure; yet others thrive receiving the same feedback. Success comes in steps just like learning. Grandiose expectations reduce the chances you will succeed. Worse, you may succeed and not realize it. Why, because you may have exceeded everyone’s expectations but your own.

Being successful is about setting your own goals while listening and accepting feedback. If you can overcome an addiction, or cope with stress or maybe improve your ability to cope with anger this is success. It’s not running a marathon nor is it becoming a CEO, but it could be more difficult. This means that you have to understand what is success to you.

Now, define personal success?

Then determine if you can establish steps to reach these goals.
Today’s Truth: Learn from others’ mistakes so you can avoid making your own.
